KERNELS OF WISDOM: How to make the most of every day in 2020

I couldn’t count the number of times in the last few weeks I’ve heard the expression, “I don’t know where the year 2019 has gone!” Sure enough 2019 is now history, and the New Year 2020 a few days old. Time sure flies doesn’t it?

And the older you get it seems to fly even faster. My Scottish mother used to say, “Time and tide wait for no man Eric.”

She was unmistakably speaking the truth, time marches on, the past is irretrievable. It is gone forever, destined for history books and personal diaries. Today as you read ‘Kernels of Wisdom’ I hope you’ll be able to glean some truth from it, truth that will enable you to live this New Year to the fullest. So fasten your seat belt as I share with you, “The Ten Ways By Which You Can Live 2020 To The Fullest.”

First of all, before you can begin to experience each new day you need to deal with the two killers of every new day, ‘yesterday’ and ‘tomorrow.’ Many people I’ve dealt with are never able to enjoy each new day because they haven’t adequately dealt with their past. It rises with them and robs them of the blessings each new day can bring. To enjoy each new day you need to deal with your ‘yesterdays.’ Whatever that takes, deal with it!

Together with that deal with any anxiety you have about tomorrow. Give it to God. He never intended you to be a perpetual ‘worry wart’!

Secondly, learn to handle your reactions. A wrong reaction to someone during the course of the day can spoil your whole day. If there’s someone in your sphere of reference who is in the habit of getting under your skin ask God for grace to deal with such individuals. The next piece of advice will enable you to do that.

Thirdly, determine to love every single person who crosses your path whether that is your spouse, your boss, a work colleague, that ‘difficult’ family member, or the guy in that slow moving vehicle in front of you. Life is essentially simple. Reduced to its bare minimum it’s this, “Love God and love every person.” Try it! It works every time.

Fourthly, spend time with God every day. If you’re a believer you have a direct link to heaven. It’s the cheapest phone plan in existence! The people that I know who are able to deal with all that life throws at them have this in common, they make that vital daily connection in prayer between them and God.

Fifthly, do something good each day! Around you there’s a whole bunch of people with real needs in their life, they’re really struggling. Give them a smile, a word of encouragement, send them a card, an email or a text. Think of something you can do to brighten up their day. Determine to be a ray of sunshine to others.

Next, don’t wish away your days. Life is short. Some of you out there say on a Wednesday, “Gee, I sure wish it was Friday!” Get out of that habit, you’re wishing you’re life away.

The seventh piece of advice is stick to at least one task each day with the intent of finishing it. There’s a sense of accomplishment about completing an assignment. Be like a postage stamp, ‘stick to the one thing until you get there!’

Eight, don’t waste time. So much of what we do in our leisure time is fruitless activity. Reduce your television or online time. Wrap up and go for a walk, exercise, volunteer at a food bank or elsewhere, read a good book, take up a new hobby, or write a letter to a prison inmate. Time is precious, use it wisely.

The ninth piece of advice is laugh more. It’s about high time you had a good laugh, isn’t it? The Bible says “laughter is good medicine.” Unquestionably it’s good for the soul. So in this New Year make a new determination to laugh, and laugh, and laugh!

Latterly, be thankful every day. Life is precious, every day is a bonus. Be thankful for life, health (or the lack of it!) food and shelter. Cultivate an attitude of gratitude, and in your daily communication with God tell Him how thankful you are for all He’s done for you. Live each day of 2020 as if it were your last and thank Him for each day’s joys and challenges.

As you step into this New Year may you walk with God each step of the way, and may you know deep within the incredible love He has for you as His child!

P.S. To all of you out there, have a wonderful 2020!
