Bishop Smith Gold wins Grade 8 boys' west volleyball title

Bishop Smith Gold upset the Highview Hawks in the Renfrew County west Grade 8 boys’ volleyball tournament held at Bishop Smith.

In the final, Bishop Smith won in straight sets by scores of 25-13 and 25-23 over the Hawks. In the semifinal, Bishop Gold beat Bishop Blue also in straight sets by scores of 25-15 and 25-19. In the quarter-final, Bishop Gold beat Mackenzie 26-16.

In round robin action, Bishop Gold finished in second place in Pool A with 10 points thanks to five wins and just one loss, 25-12 against the Hawks. Bishop Gold beat Valour White 25-18, Jeanne-Lajoie 25-12, Rockwood 25-9, Pine View 25-10 and St. Mary’s 25-6.

The loss in the final was Highview’s first defeat of the day. In the semifinal the Hawks beat Equinoxe in straight sets by scores of 25-23 and 25-14 and in the quarter-final beat Beachburg 25-22.

The Hawks finished first in Pool A after round robin play with 12 points thanks to a 6-0 record. Highview beat Bishop Gold 25-12, Valour White and Pine View 25-15, Jeanne-Lajoie and Rockwood 25-10 and St. Mary’s 25-22.

The Equinoxe Patriotes finished third overall thanks to a three sets to two (25-23, 23-25, 15-13) win over Bishop Blue. Equinoxe lost to Highview in the semifinal but beat Valour White in the quarter-final 25-17.

Equinoxe finished second in Pool B following the round robin with four wins and one loss. The Patriotes beat Valour Green 25-14, Mackenzie 25-18, Champlain Discovery 25-21 and Beachburg 25-20 and lost 26-16 against Bishop Blue.

Bishop Blue lost to Bishop Gold in the semifinal and in the quarter-final beat Rockwood 25-19. Bishop Blue finished first overall in Pool B following the round robin thanks to four wins and one loss. They beat Valour Green 25-10, Champlain 25-13, Equinoxe 25-16, Beachburg 25-8 and lost 25-20 against Valour Green.

Valour White finished third in Pool A after the round robin with six points thanks to three wins and three losses. They beat Jeanne-Lajoie 25-22, Rockwood 30-28, Pine View 25-2 and lost 25-18 against Bishop Gold, 25-15 against Highview and 25-17 against St. Mary’s.

Mackenzie finished third in Pool B in the round robin with eight points thanks to four wins and one loss. They beat Bishop Blue 25-20, edged Valour Green 25-23, beat Champlain 25-16, beat Beachburg 25-17 and lost 25-18 against Equinoxe.

In the consolation final, St. Mary’s beat Champlain two sets to one by scores of 19-25, 25-10 and 17-15. St. Mary’s won the semifinal 25-21 over Valour Green. The Stallions finished sixth in Pool A after the round robin with four points. St. Mary’s beat Pine View 25-14 and Valour White 25-17 and lost 25-19 against Jeanne-Lajoie and 25-21 against Rockwood.

Champlain finished sixth in Pool B after the round robin as they were winless in five games.
